Philosophy:
The R. D. Head Media Center provides materials to promote
the love of reading and to support the curriculum. We provide
resources for students and faculty in the form of print, non-print
and electronic materials. Its resources include over 10,000
books, 25 computers with internet access, numerous videos and
DVDs and subscriptions to professional journals as well as magazines
of interest to elementary school students. We are eager to help
students complete assignments, explore ideas, and find a wide
variety of recreational reading on many levels and topics. Our
hope is that our students will become lovers of reading, independent
library users, informed users of information, and life-long
learners.
Hours:
The Media Center is open to all students for general
check out immediately after Headline News until 3:15. Students
may return books before Headline News, but not check them out.
Checking Out Materials:
Kindergarten students may check out 1 book for
1 week.
First Grade through Fifth Grade students may check out 2 books
for 2 weeks.
Starting in Third Grade, students may check out magazines overnight.
Books may be renewed once.
Lost and Damaged Books:
If a book becomes lost or damaged students will need to pay
$15.00 for a hardback book or $5.00 for a paperback book..
Overdue Policy:
We do not charge fines for overdue books. However, if a student
has an overdue book, we suspend borrowing privileges until the
book is brought back. Overdue notices will be given to students
once a month.
Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer-based reading program
used by 2nd-5th graders at R.D. Head. Through this program,
students take computerized tests in the Media Center or in their
classrooms on books they have read, answering multiple-choice
questions that check their recall of facts and events in the
book. After finishing the test, students get a point score based
on the reading level and length of the book, and the number
of questions they answered correctly. The computer keeps track
of every student's points and their comprehension scores, allowing
teachers to monitor their students' progress.
